How to Stay Alive in the Woods
Camping enthusiasts, hunters, and even the occasional hiker will benefit from this all-inclusive guide to the woods which offers tips on finding food, water, and shelter, and reveals fascinating secrets of the wilderness.
Amazon.com Review:
Rosehips, rich in vitamin C, will remedy scurvy. Poplar, red cedar, elm, and willow are preferable for friction fires. If stuck on a flat, shelterless desert, dig a shallow pit (east-west) to lie in; even a few feet can result in a 100-degree temperature change. This is the sort of information outdoor enthusiasts will find in Bradford Angier's classic guide to survival in the wilderness. Divided into four parts (sustenance, warmth, orientation, safety), How To Stay Alive in the Woods is packed with woodcraft tips and age-old tricks--and it's packable as well, so don't leave home without it.

Mark Monmonier - From Squaw Tit to Whorehouse Meadow: How Maps Name, Claim, and Inflame
Brassiere Hills, Alaska. Mollys Nipple, Utah. Outhouse Draw, Nevada. In the early twentieth century, it was common for towns and geographical features to have salacious, bawdy, and even derogatory names. In the age before political correctness, mapmakers readily accepted any local preference for place names, prizing accurate representation over standards of decorum. Thus, summits such as Squaw Tit—which towered above valleys in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and California—found their way into the cartographic annals. Later, when sanctions prohibited local use of racially, ethnically, and scatalogically offensive toponyms, town names like Jap Valley, California, were erased from the national and cultural map forever.
From Squaw Tit to Whorehouse Meadow probes this little-known chapter in American cartographic history by considering the intersecting efforts to computerize mapmaking, standardize geographic names, and respond to public concern over ethnically offensive appellations. Interweaving cartographic history with tales of politics and power, celebrated geographer Mark Monmonier locates his story within the past and present struggles of mapmakers to create an orderly process for naming that avoids confusion, preserves history, and serves different political aims. Anchored by a diverse selection of naming controversies—in the United States, Canada, Cyprus, Israel, Palestine, and Antarctica; on the ocean floor and the surface of the moon; and in other parts of our solar system—From Squaw Tit to Whorehouse Meadow richly reveals the map’s role as a mediated portrait of the cultural landscape. And unlike other books that consider place names, this is the first to reflect on both the real cartographic and political imbroglios they engender.
From Squaw Tit to Whorehouse Meadow is Mark Monmonier at his finest: a learned analysis of a timely and controversial subject rendered accessible—and even entertaining—to the general reader.

Distant Provinces in the Inka Empire
Who was in charge of the widespread provinces of the great Inka Empire of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: Inka from the imperial heartland or local leaders who took on the trappings of their conquerors, either by coercion or acceptance? By focusing on provinces far from the capital of Cuzco, the essays in this multidisciplinary volume provide up-to-date information on the strategies of domination asserted by the Inka across the provinces far from their capital and the equally broad range of responses adopted by their conquered peoples.
Contributors to this cutting-edge volume incorporate the interaction of archaeological and ethnohistorical research with archaeobotany, biometrics, architecture, and mining engineering, among other fields. The geographical scope of the chapters—which cover the Inka provinces in Bolivia, in southeast Argentina, in southern Chile, along the central and north coast of Peru, and in Ecuador—build upon the many different ways in which conqueror and conquered interacted. Competing factors such as the kinds of resources available in the provinces, the degree of cooperation or resistance manifested by local leaders, the existing levels of political organization convenient to the imperial administration, and how recently a region had been conquered provide a wealth of information on regions previously understudied. Using detailed contextual analyses of Inka and elite residences and settlements in the distant provinces, the essayists evaluate the impact of the empire on the leadership strategies of conquered populations, whether they were Inka by privilege, local leaders acculturated to Inka norms, or foreign mid-level administrators from trusted ethnicities.

"The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific" by J. Maarten Troost
This book recounts the experiences of the author while he lived in Kiribati. A few names have been changed, either because the author, who is very bad with names, couldn’t remember what they were, or to protect their privacy. Also, since we’re disclaiming here, the author wishes to acknowledge that in a few incidents recounted herein, he has played a little fast and loose with the space-time continuum. He has done this for you, the reader.
With The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Maarten Troost has delivered one of the most original, rip-roaringly funny travelogues in years—one that will leave you thankful for staples of American civilization such as coffee, regular showers, and tabloid news, and that will provide the ultimate vicarious adventure.

Maliha Masood - Zaatar Days, Henna Nights: Adventures, Dreams, and Destinations Across the Middle East
When twenty-eight-year-old Maliha Masood, a burned-out dot-commer from Seattle, bought a one-way ticket to adventure and rejuvenation, she found it in the most unlikely of places: the Middle East.
With an infectious love of adventure, a zany sense of humor, and serious questions about her Islamic faith, Pakistani-born Masood begins an unforgettable journey. She camps in the Sahara with a Bedouin "desert fox," is mistaken for a spy in Turkey, takes a lesson in beauty from a Kurdish family, and falls in love with a poet. She experiences souks and mosques, open-air lingerie bazaars and nightclubs grooving to hip-hop. In a region associated with terrorist havens, Masood meets ordinary Muslim men and women navigating the politics of culture, religion, and identity.
Zaatar Days, Henna Nights offers a street-savvy take on the contemporary Arab world that's seldom seen on the evening news. This is a story of discovery and faith, of making bonds and breaking stereotypes, and of finding oneself where one least expects to.

Scott B. Williams - On Island Time: Kayaking the Caribbean
Tourists visit popular islands of the Caribbean by the planeload. What they don't see from their resort hotels are the hundreds of out-of-the-way, uninhabited islands sprinkled along the West Indies chain from Florida to South America. This alluring archipelago, strung with beaches accessible only by boat but spaced temptingly close together, led Mississippi adventurer Scott B. Williams to embark upon an open-ended quest to see how far south he could go in a seventeen-foot sea kayak.
No one was willing to accompany him. He spent months working his way down the west coast of Florida, through the Bahamas, and on to Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. On Island Time, his narrative of this journey of a lifetime, describes the wonders of discovery as he makes landfall on pristine cays. Relentless headwinds, dangerous surf, countless beaches declared off-limits to trespassing, and aggressive sharks that ram his kayak and snap him out of his musing remind the adventurer that this paradise is far from perfect. Every day of the journey required constant vigilance.
With no one to depend on and often no one even knowing where he was for weeks at a time, Williams learned what it means to be self-reliant and to adjust to "island time." With just a simple, human-powered craft and the few belongings that would fit inside, Williams explores an almost boundless frontier and a powerful natural stretch of the Caribbean rarely if ever accessed by the island tourist.

Omnia El Shakry - The Great Social Laboratory: Subjects of Knowledge in Colonial and Postcolonial Egypt
The Great Social Laboratory charts the development of the human sciences—anthropology, human geography, and demography—in late nineteenth- and twentieth-century Egypt. Tracing both intellectual and institutional genealogies of knowledge production, this book examines social science through a broad range of texts and cultural artifacts, ranging from the ethnographic museum, to architectural designs, to that pinnacle of social scientific research—”the article.”
The author explores the interface between European and Egyptian social scientific discourses and interrogates the boundaries of knowledge production in a colonial and post-colonial setting. She examines the complex imperatives of race, class, and gender in the Egyptian colonial context, uncovering the new modes of governance, expertise, and social knowledge that defined a distinctive era of nationalist politics in the inter- and post-war periods. Finally, she examines the discursive field mapped out by colonial and nationalist discourses on the racial identity of the modern Egyptians.

Tourism and Visual Culture, Volume 1
Tourism is an essentially visual experience: we leave our homes so as to travel to see places, thus adding to our personal knowledge about, and experience of, the world. The study of tourism as a complex social phenomenon, beyond simply business, is increasing in importance, and by providing an examination of perceptions of culture and society in tourism destinations through the tourist's eyes, this book discusses how destinations were, and are, created and perceived through the 'lens' of the tourist's gaze.

The Other St Petersburg
An alternative guide to St Petersburg. Who are the real Petersburgers? What is portwine? Why is it important to be kind? Are Petersburgers just very inept? Why could you never mistake a Petersburger for a Muscovite?
The Other St Petersburg asks the questions other guidebooks are afraid to ask and comes up with the answers no one else has yet dared to publish.
The Other St Petersburg contains - amongst much else - translations of short stories by Daniil Kharms (The Old Woman, 1939) and Yevgeny Zvyagin (Shades of the Hermitage, 1983), and absolutely no mention of the Kirovsky Ballet, matryoshki, Peter the Great or what to do when your baggage gets rerouted via Melbourne.

Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity: 8 Steps on the Path to Abundance
Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity continues the popular Fast Feng Shui series with the easy, effective, step-by-step advice that readers have come to expect from contemporary feng shui expert Stephanie Roberts. In her new book, Ms. Roberts combines the power of contemporary feng shui to transform your space with the inner transformations that unleash your ability to succeed and prosper. When the spaces in your home that govern your finances are cluttered, stagnant or missing from your floor plan, it can be difficult to attract and hold on to money. Poor feng shui can also lead to increased arguments and miscommunication, affect your reputation at work, and hinder your personal growth--all of which may contribute to financial difficulties. By improving the feng shui of your home or office, these obstacles to prosperity are removed or corrected. Feng shui practiced in this way works from the outside in: by improving the chi of your external environment you improve your financial experience, whether in subtle or dramatic ways. Feng shui also recognizes that you are the most powerful factor in your space, an often-overlooked key to success that Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity explores in depth. In order to create lasting improvement in your financial circumstances, you need to create an inner environment (thoughts, feelings, and beliefs) that supports long-term prosperity rather than leading you further into over-spending, under-earning, and ever-increasing debt. This is feng shui practiced from the inside out: by uncovering inner blocks to prosperity and embracing key lessons from the ba gua (the feng shui energy map), we empower ourselves to experience abundance in all aspects of our lives. By combining the outer feng shui transformation of your space with inner transformations inspired by the ba gua, your ability to attract and manifest money will be unleashed. This exciting new addition to the Fast Feng Shui series also provides detailed instructions for six powerful feng shui cash flow rituals, including both ancient methods and modern practices. The extensive Appendices cover the essential feng shui basics, including: how to understand and use the ba gua (the feng shui energy map); how to use the five feng shui elements to increase the effectiveness of your feng shui; an alphabetical guide to 30 Wealth Symbols from both Chinese and Western traditions; tips for using other common feng shui cures and accessories; and a Resource Guide to books and audio-programs that support your inner transformation.

Chaos and Organization in Health Care
One of the most daunting challenges facing the new U.S. administration is health care reform. The size of the system, the number of stakeholders, and ever-rising costs make the problem seem almost intractable. But in Chaos and Organization in Health Care, two leading physicians offer an optimistic prognosis. In their frontline work as providers, Thomas Lee and James Mongan see the inefficiency, the missed opportunities, and the occasional harm that can result from the current system. The root cause of these problems, they argue, is chaos in the delivery of care.

This report is an essential reference to those who need to determine the adequacy of population food intakes; set national food and nutrition guidelines and regulations on the protein and amino acid content of industrially processed foods; determine nutrient needs, and evaluate and ensure the adequacy of rations for vulnerable groups. Last Call: Alcoholism and Recovery
"I knew about drunk, but did not know anything about living sober. I hadn't really been sober for fifteen years. It wasn't enough that I stopped drinking. I had to learn how to live."
The journey from alcoholic insanity to sobriety -- and the pivotal role of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in navigating that transition -- is the focus of Last Call. Using powerful first-person narratives like the one above (composites of many anonymous speakers), psychotherapist Jack H. Hedblom provides compelling insights into the minds and hearts of addicted drinkers, from bizarre behavior and denial to the moment of "hitting bottom" and seeking change.
Hedblom covers the process of getting sober, from diagnosis to detox to sobriety. He focuses on the challenge of learning to live without drinking -- a long-term goal, Hedblom asserts, that is best achieved by regular participation in AA.
Hedblom's vivid descriptions reveal AA meetings as gatherings of fellowship, compassion, tears, and laughter. In relating the history of the organization, he describes the role of sponsors, elaborates on the Twelve Steps and the Promises, emphasizes the importance of spiritual development in recovery, and refutes the common misconceptions that equate spirituality with organized religion.
Through the stories of people who have escaped the tyranny of alcoholism with the help of AA, Hedblom shows that the road to recovery is a journey of self-discovery, change, and hope.

Theory of Individual Behavior
A Theory of Individual Behavior dispels the notion that individuals act as rational agents and strives to capture idiosyncratic humanness through rigorous mathematics. Wichers describes a version of economic behavior that is more comprehensive and satisfying than neoclassical models yet still consistent with the usual aggregated concepts that form the basis of applied microeconomics. Written in an accessible and convincing style, A Theory of Individual Behavior discusses innovative material in a format that encourages classroom use. All chapters have questions at their conclusions, and there is a strong emphasis on testable results. The book contains a short review of mathematical models and discussion of received microeconomic theory, as well as summaries at the ends of chapters and many examples and illustrations.

The Mind Map Book: How to Use Radiant Thinking to Maximize Your Brain's Untapped Potential
An authority on learning techniques and the brain offers a groundbreaking, fully illustrated program for tapping and freeing the mind's hidden powers, showing ways to improve memory, concentration, and creativity. National ad/promo.
From Publishers Weekly
This idea-rich, relentlessly upbeat manual proffers graphic images as an aid to unlock creative thinking or clarify emotions. Drawing loosely on brain research, learning theory and information science, English business consultant/TV personality Tony Buzan (Use Both Sides of Your Brain) and his brother Barry, a professor of international studies, first outline "radiant thinking," a method designed to enhance one's associative, nonlinear thought processes. Next they explain how to create "mind maps"-colorful, structured, drawings, cartoonish or complex-as a tool to overcome mental blocks, organize ideas, brainstorm, strengthen one's memory and imagination, and make meetings more productive. Despite its inflated claims and cluttered presentation, this unusual how-to, replete with exercises, quizzes, dramatic color photos of patterns in nature, and sample mind maps, will challenge and stimulate the open-minded.

Creative Dreaming
Creative Dreaming by Dr. Patricia Garfield is an excellent abridged version of her book by the same name. The audio program offers suggestions to induce and inspire creative dreaming, explains what creative dreaming is about, and explains techniques anyone can use to remember dreams. She includes a special section on how to combat nightmares as well as a guided visualization at the end to help you meet and interact with important dream characters. This has been a favorite bedtime audio of mine for literally decades now. The techniques really work well and can be helpful for people who are new at working with dream imagery and symbolism. If anything, Dr. Garfield's soothing voice can be a sleep inducer by itself.
Dreams are more than just random images that play in your head at night. They are a source of inspiration and transformation that can have a profound effect on your waking state. While everyone dreams, not everyone makes use of this unique resource. Patricia Garfield presents techniques and information, drawn from many dreamers and widely varied cultures and times, that will enable you to plan your dreams ahead of time, influence them while they are occurring, and recall them and their lessons forever afterward.

Sex in Cyberspace: Men Who Pay for Sex
"Sex in Cyberspace" offers a bold and provocative, yet sensitively written, account of an under-investigated area of sociological enquiry. While there is a considerable amount of research documenting the experiences of sex workers, very little data exists on their male clientele. The first empirically-based study on the experiences of men who pay for sex, this work presents a significant new source of data. The book is based upon an extensive study of on-line forums in which both the purchasers of sexual services and the workers themselves can exchange information and views - information which is otherwise extremely difficult to obtain. Sarah Earle and Keith Sharp argue that such sites represent a significant change in the social organization of sex work and those who seek and use the services of sex workers. Shedding new light on men's sexual identity, "Sex in Cyberspace" makes a major contribution to the study of sexuality.
