- W. J. T. Mitchell - Iconology: Image, Text, Ideolog
- Publisher: University Of Chicago Press | 1987-07-15 | ISBN: 0226532291 | PDF | 236 pages | 10.68 MB
- "[Mitchell] undertakes to explore the nature of images by comparing them with words, or, more precisely, by looking at them from the viewpoint of verbal language. . . . The most lucid exposition of the subject I have ever read."--Rudolf Arnheim, Times Literary Supplement
- Mitchell brings a kind of consensus approach within literary criticism to bear on the criticism of visual imagery; the criticism of an image as if it were a text. A lot of this has been done, without any discipline or care for consistency or clarity, by an army of post-structuralist French critics, with uneven results. Not that Agamben, Derrida and so on aren't quite worth reading, but I'd guess that reading them would be a lot more rewarding for someone who had read this little book first.

100 Years of Fashion Illustration
- Cally Blackman 100 Years of Fashion Illustration
- Laurence King Publishers | 2007 | ISBN: 1856694623 | 382 pages | PDF | 181 MB
- A visual feast of 400 dazzling images, this is a comprehensive survey of the genre over the last century. The book also offers an overview of the development of fashion, as seen through the eyes of the greatest illustrators of the day. Early in the century fashion illustration reflected new, liberating currents in art and culture, such as the exoticism of the Ballets Russes, while the postwar period saw inspiration from the great Parisian couturiers. After the dominance of the celebrity fashion photographer in the '60s, a new generation of illustrators emerged, embracing the medium of the computer, while many returned to more traditional techniques.

- Irene Eynat-Confino - On the Uses of the Fantastic in Modern Theatre: Cocteau, Oedipus, and the Monster
- Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan | 2008-11-15 | ISBN: 0230608213 | PDF | 208 pages | 10.52 MB
- In this innovative reading, Irene Eynat-Confino offers an explanation for the higher effectiveness of the fantastic in theatre. Taking Cocteau’s masterpiece The Infernal Machine as a case study, she also reveals that when the fantastic is introduced within a realistic context, it encodes and conveys unconventional notions. The book addresses such issues as identity, the Oedipus myth and Freud, homosexuality and homophobia, marginality, and the role of the artist in society.

The Great International Paper Airplane Book

- Fireside | 1971 | ISBN: 0671211293, 1578660289 | 127 pages | Djvu | 7,6 MB
- My dad bought this book for me when I was 9 years old, and I was hooked on making paper airplanes for years--and so was he! This delightful book, first published in 1967, and still in print, brings together plans for the 20 best of the 11,851 entrants from the 1st International Paper Airplane contest sponsored by Scientific American. Some trivia: the smallest entry was .08" x .00003 inches; the largest, 11 feet!. Guranteed to provide hours of amusement, and possibly even inspire careers in aerodynamics. (The polymathic primary author of this book--Jerry Mander--has also written a tremendous volume on the inherent evils of television as a medium, Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television).

Art Power
- Publisher: MIT Press | ISBN: 0262072920 | edition 2008 | PDF | 224 pages | 10,5 mb
- Art has its own power in the world, and is as much a force in the power play of global politics today as it once was in the arena of cold war politics. Art, argues distinguished theoretician Boris Groys, is hardly a powerless commodity subject to the art market's fiats of inclusion and exclusion. In Art Power, Groys examines modern and contemporary art according to its ideological function. Art, Groys writes, is produced and brought before the public in two ways—as a commodity and as a tool of political propaganda. In the contemporary art scene, very little attention is paid to the latter function; the official and unofficial art of the former Soviet Union and other former Socialist states, for example, is largely excluded from the field of institutionally recognized art, usually on moral grounds (although, Groys points out, criticism of the morality of the market never leads to calls for a similar exclusion of art produced under market conditions).

- The emphasis is on multiple camera television, although serious considerations is given to single camera production in those formats where single camera production is the predominant production technique (i.e., documentaries and commercials/PSAs). The material in the book comes from the author's own experience in the industry and in university settings. Finding that students are adept at handling equipment but often lacking in actual production technique, this text addresses what outlines are needed by whom and why; how to mark a script; what a rehearsal agenda ought to be, and more.
- This approach to television production, which outlines the demands of each format, gives the students the tools they need to help them direct and produce efficiently in a variety of settings.

- Krzysztof Wodiczko - Critical Vehicles: Writings, Projects, Interviews
- Publisher: The MIT Press | 1999-02-12 | ISBN: 0262731223 | PDF | 245 pages | 5.80 MB
- Krzysztof: "Now we have the option of combining the part for bottles and cans with the sleeping part below. What [Victor] is saying is that it doesn't have to be the entire length of the body because you can sleep with legs bent. So that means it could be shorter, and then all the storage area could be above and closed with a plastic seal."
- Oscar: "Right, not only is there protection from the wind, but it's theft-proof . . . you've got to think about when you're underneath, and somebody attacks you." -- Conversations about a Project for a Homeless Vehicle
- Krzysztof Wodiczko, one of the most original avant-garde artists of our time, is perhaps best known for the politically charged images he has projected onto buildings and monuments from New York to Warsaw--images of rockets projected onto triumphal arches, the image of handcuffed wrists projected onto a courthouse facade, images of homeless people in bandages and wheelchairs projected onto statues in a park from which they had been evicted. In projects such as the "Homeless Vehicle," which he designed through discussions with homeless people, Wodiczko has helped to make public space a place where marginalized people can speak, establish their presence, and assert their rights.
- Critical Vehicles is the first book in English to collect Wodiczko's own writings on his projects. Wodiczko has stated that his principal artistic concern is the displacement of traditional notions of community and identity in the face of rapidly expanding technologies and cultural miscommunication. In these writings he addresses such issues as urbanism, homelessness, immigration, alienation, and the plight of refugees. Fusing wit and sophisticated political insight, he offers the artistic means to help heal the damages of uprootedness and other contemporary troubles.

- Publisher: I. B. Tauris | 2003-07-04 | ISBN: 1860649106 | PDF | 144 pages | 5.70 MB
- Mike Hodges’ bleak gangster film was released in 1971 to controversy and mixed reviews. Three decades later in the British Film Institute’s millennial poll, the film was voted one of the 20 best British films of all time. Steve Chibnall’s enjoyable and fresh account relates the film to others in its genre like Point Blank and Dirty Harry, profiles the people involved in its making and presents a fascinating analysis of the film text itself. He completes the story-so-far, looking at the critical reception, and cultural context and the two remakes: the 1972 blaxploitation film Hit Man and the new Stephen T. Kay movie, set in the US.

Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry: Techniques for Creating Dimensional Necklaces and Bracelets
- "Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry: Techniques for Creating Dimensional Necklaces and Bracelets", Scott David Plumlee
- Watson-Guptill | 2006 | ISBN: 0823022994 | English | 129 pages | JPG | 12.85 Mb
- Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry shows how to create beautiful, dimensional silver, copper, and brass chains using simple tools. The main style is based on the elegant, classical Byzantine pattern, and uses the Golden Ratio to determine the circumference of a chain’s interlocking rings based on the thickness of the wire. Illustrated step-by-step directions show how to calculate the circumference of the rings, how to wrap wire into coils, how to cut, and finally, how to assemble the chain. Starting from the basic Byzantine, new chain makers can then progress to increasingly Byzantine variations, including linear, knot, crown, and combination chains. Incorporating beads and charms offers endless possibilities for crafters who will soon, surely, be locked up in chains!

Transfigurements: On the True Sense of Art
- John Sallis, "Transfigurements: On the True Sense of Art"
- University Of Chicago Press | 2008-11-15 | ISBN: 0226734226 | 208 pages | PDF | 1 MB
- What is art really about? What is its true sense? For John Sallis, we cannot gain a genuine understanding of art by merely translating its effects into conceptual language. Rather, works of art must be approached in a way that does justice to their sensuous and enigmatic character—that illuminates their capacity to present truth without pretending to dispel the real mystery at art’s core.
- Transfigurements develops a framework for thinking about art through innovative readings of some of the most important philosophical writing on the subject by Kant, Hegel, and Heidegger. Sallis exposes new layers in these texts and theories while also marking their limits. By doing so, his aim is to show that philosophy needs to attend to art directly. Consequently, Sallis also addresses a wide range of works of art, including paintings by Raphael, Monet, and Klee; Shakespeare’s comedies; and the music of Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, and Tan Dun. Through these interpretations of classic works from both fields, Sallis puts forth a compelling new elaboration of the philosophy of art.

Knitting Out of Africa: Inspired Sweater Designs
- Knitting Out of Africa: Inspired Sweater Designs by Marianne Isager
- Interweave Press | 2006 | ISBN: 1931499985 | English | 147 pages | PDF | 18.50 Mb
- Beautiful and historic African carpets, baskets, and other textiles provide the design inspiration for these 16 sophisticated knitted cardigans, pullovers, and sweater vests. Intended for seasoned knitters, these projects use domino, double knitting, entrelac, intarsia, and stranded two-color techniques worked in fingering-weight yarns. The Shoowa Vest, the African Domino Pullover, and the Arrowheads Cropped Pullover show off fancy stitching, while other designs feature colors borrowed from the mud-dried fabrics of Mali, the block patterns of Ghana, or motifs from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zaire, and Zimbabwe. African animals decorate the Giraffe Vest and Zebra Cardigan, and elsewhere leaping antelope and birds in flight are used in repeating patterns. Full instructions and charted patterns for at least two adult sizes are provided for each design and high-quality photographs of the finished pieces showcase these classic additions to any wardrobe.

The Collection of Alchemical and Hermetic Emblems [Vols. 1-6]
- The Collection of Alchemical and Hermetic Emblems [Volumes 1-6]
- Adam McLean | 1999-2001 | ISBN: none | 584 pages | PDF | 114 Mb
- This is the most significant collection that has ever been made of alchemical and related emblems. These have been hand coloured by Adam McLean from original woodcuts, engravings and drawings in manuscripts. An enormous amount of research has gone into uncovering rare and previously unknown emblems, and obtaining high quality images of these items. McLean has handcoloured these images to make them more approachable by the modern eye. In some cases, with the most complex emblems, it took over 15 hours to paint an image. The painting respects the original traditional colouring of images in alchemical manuscripts.

Beading with Gemstones: Beautiful Jewelry, Simple Techniques
- "Beading with Gemstones: Beautiful Jewelry, Simple Techniques", Valerie MacCarthy
- Lark Books | 2007 | ISBN: 157990887X | English | 123 pages | PDF | 14.50 Mb
- Beading doesn’t get more elegant than this, with such gleaming gems as amethyst, quartz, and lapis lazuli. Valérie MacCarthy—whose work graces the pages of high fashion magazines around the world—has created a magnificent collection of sophisticated, unique jewelry. The 30 projects include bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings, and they tend to the playful and colorful. In addition, an entire section is dedicated to the different stones and their properties, including their spiritual and healing aspects. But what will really entice intermediate jewelers, beaders, and other general crafters are the pieces themselves: a balloon ring, festooned with seed pearls; chandelier earrings with sparkling, dangling stones; and a fireworks necklace of citrine, peridot, and apatite. Introductory chapters present all the gems, tools, and techniques used in the pieces.

Minimal Art (Taschen Basic Art)
- Daniel Marzona, "Minimal Art (Taschen Basic Art)"
- Taschen | 2004 | ISBN: 3822830607 | 96 pages | PDF | 65 MB
- Founded as a backlash against abstract expressionism, minimalism was characterized by simplified, stripped-down forms and materials used to express ideas in a direct and impersonal manner. By presenting objects as simple objects, minimal artists sought to communicate without referring to expressive or historical themes. This critical movement, which began in the 1960s and branched out into land art, performance art, and conceptual art, is still a major influence today. Featured artists: Carl Andre, Stephen Antonakos, Jo Baer, Larry Bell, Ronald Bladen, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Robert Grosvenor, Eva Hesse, Donald Judd, Gary Kuehn, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, John McCracken, Robert Morris, Robert Ryman, Fred Sandback, Richard Serra, Tony Smith, Robert Smithson, Anne Truitt.

Tiffany Stern - Rehearsal from Shakespeare to Sheridan
- Tiffany Stern - Rehearsal from Shakespeare to Sheridan
- Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | 2008-02-20 | ISBN: 0199229724 | PDF | 350 pages | 13.50 MB
- Attention is often given to the performance of a text, but not to the shaping process behind that performance. The question of rehearsal is seldom confronted directly, though important textual moments - like revision - are often attributed to it. Furthermore, up until now, facts about theatrical rehearsal have been considered irrecoverable.
- In this groundbreaking new study, Tiffany Stern gathers together two centuries' worth of historical material which shows how actors received and responded to their parts, and how rehearsal affected the creation and revision of plays. This is the first history of the subject, from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth. It examines the nature and changing content of rehearsal, drawing on a mass of autobiographical, textual, and journalistic sources, and in so doing throws new light on textual revision and transforms accepted notions of Renaissance, Restoration, and eighteenth-century theatrical practice. Plotting theatrical change over time, this book will revolutionize the fields of textual and theatre history alike.

Elizabeth A. Ford, Deborah C. Mitchell - Royal Portraits in Hollywood: Filming the Lives of Queens
- Elizabeth A. Ford, Deborah C. Mitchell - Royal Portraits in Hollywood: Filming the Lives of Queens
- Publisher: University Press of Kentucky | 2009-04-08 | ISBN: 081312543X | PDF | 338 pages | 5.91 MB
- In the history of cinema, many film genres have gained and lost popularity with the changing times, but one has maintained its supreme reign -- the royal biopic. In Royal Portraits in Hollywood: Filming the Lives of Queens, authors Elizabeth A. Ford and Deborah C. Mitchell follow the lives of historical queens as depicted on film from the 1930s to the present. Women as diverse as Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, Mary Stuart, and Marie Antoinette have been represented on the silver screen, dominating the masculine world of politics while maintaining their femininity. During the golden age of American film, these roles gave Hollywood a means of portraying powerful women without threatening the patriarchal social order. Depictions of the lives of queens have progressed from idealized and romanticized portraits to the more personal, complex portrayals of modern Hollywood. By walking the line between fact and fiction, these royal portraits of queens reveal just as much our society as they do about the historical periods they represent. Audiences are drawn to the theaters year after year because the lives of queens promise good drama and attract some of the most talented actresses. The success of Hollywood's leading ladies in playing queens further solidifies the link between Hollywood royalty and authentic royalty. Actresses such as Bette Davis, Judy Dench, Helen Mirren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Greta Garbo have done more than influence the way we imagine historical queens -- they also have changed how we perceive women in powerful positions today. Royal Portraits in Hollywood analyzes seventy-five years of films about queens as well as the lives of the actresses who starred in them. Combining biographical sketches and excerpts from letters and journals, Ford and Mitchell show how filmmaking and our society's perceptions of gender have changed. The authors compare Hollywood's on-screen portrayals to the historical records, often drawing connections to the actresses' careers and personal lives. This comprehensive analysis provides a more complete picture of the lives that take place behind the thrones -- both real and fictional. The spectacle of a woman dressed in the full regalia of power remains a compelling image in our society. Hollywood actresses and the queens they portray are women who wield power, and by examining the lives of these women, the authors reveal not only society's perceptions about female power but also how those perceptions continue to evolve.

Bach's Dialogue with Modernity: Perspectives on the Passions
- John Butt, "Bach's Dialogue with Modernity: Perspectives on the Passions"
- Cambridge University Press | 2010 | ISBN: 0521883563 | 330 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB
- Providing a detailed analysis of Bach's Passions, this book represents an important contribution to the debate about the culture of 'classical music', its origins, priorities and survival. The angles from which each chapter proceeds differ from those of a traditional music guide, by examining the Passions in the light of the mindsets of modernity, and their interplay with earlier models of thought and belief. While the historical details of Bach's composition, performance and theological context remain crucial, the foremost concern of this study is to relate these works to a historical context that may, in some threads at least, still be relevant today. The central claim of the book is that the interplay of traditional imperatives and those of early modernity renders Bach's Passions particularly fascinating as artefacts that both reflect and constitute some of the priorities and conditions of the western world.

Rachel Shteir - Gypsy: The Art of the Tease (Icons of America)
- Rachel Shteir - Gypsy: The Art of the Tease (Icons of America)
- Publisher: Yale University Press | 2009-03-24 | ISBN: 0300120400 | PDF | 240 pages | 5.58 MB
- A true icon of America at a turning point in its history, Gypsy Rose Lee was the first—and the only—stripper to become a household name, write novels, and win the adulation of intellectuals, bankers, socialites, and ordinary Americans. Her outrageous blend of funny-smart sex symbol with the aura of high culture—she boasted that she liked to read Great Books and listen to classical music while taking off her clothes on-stage—inspired a musical, memoirs, a portrait by Max Ernst, and a species of rose. Gypsy is the first book about Gypsy Rose Lee’s life, fame, and place in America not written by a family member, and it reveals her deep impact on the social and cultural transformations taking shape during her life.
- Rachel Shteir, author of the prize-winning Striptease, gives us Gypsy’s story from her arrival in New York in 1931 to her sojourns in Hollywood, her friendships and rivalries with writers and artists, the Sondheim musical, family memoirs that retold her history in divergent ways, and a television biopic currently in the making. With verve, audacity, and native guile, Gypsy Rose Lee moved striptease from the margins of American life to Broadway, Hollywood, and Main Street. Gypsy tells how she did it, and why.

Kerstin Schmidt - The Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American Drama
- Kerstin Schmidt - The Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American Drama
- Publisher: Rodopi | 2005-04 | ISBN: 904201895X | PDF | 230 pages | 5.97 MB
- The Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American drama offers a fresh and innovative reading of the contemporary experimental American theater scene and navigates through the contested and contentious relationship between postmodernism and contemporary drama. This book addresses gender and class as well as racial issues in the context of a theoretical discussion of dramatic texts, textuality, and performance. Transformation is contemporary drama's answer to the questions of postmodernism and a major technique in the development of a postmodern language for the stage. In order to demonstrate the multi-faceted nature of the postmodern theater of transformation, this study draws on a wide range of plays: from early experimental plays of the 1960s by Jean-Claude van Itallie through feminist plays by Megan Terry and Rochelle Owens to more recent drama by the African-American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks. The Theater of Transformation: Postmodernism in American Drama is written for anyone interested in contemporary American drama and theater as well as in postmodernism and contemporary literary theory. It appeals even more broadly to a readership intrigued by the ubiquitous aspects of popular culture, by feminism and ethnicity, and by issues pertaining to the so-called 'society of spectacle' and the study of contemporary media.

And Picasso Painted Guernica
- Alain Serres, "And Picasso Painted Guernica"
- Allen & Unwin | 2010 | ISBN: 1741759943 | 52 pages | PDF | 15,1 MB
- Readers can come face to face with an astonishing creative spirit in this beautiful book for children about Picasso, his journey as an artist, and how he painted his iconic work, Guernica.
- Picasso's artistic genius was clear from childhood. This outstanding book begins with the doves young Pablo painted with his father when he was only seven, then highlights his later passions for harlequins and street people, bulls and minotaurs, new ways of seeing, and new ways of rendering life. All of these contributed to the massive work 1937 Guernica, painted as a protest against the bombing of defenseless civilians and against the brutality of war everywhere. It is a biography of both an epoch-making artist and a unique painting that resonated with the outrage of people around the world. Not just a beautiful book, with many working drawings, photographs, and full-color paintings, this is also a fascinating insight into the creative process. At the heart of the book is the complete work, spread across an eight-page gatefold.
